About Laurentian State Forest

Laurentian State Forest covers over 327,000 acres in north-central Minnesota, primarily within Cass and Itasca counties. The forest features a mix of boreal and northern hardwood ecosystems, with dense stands of pine, spruce, fir, aspen, and birch. Numerous lakes, rivers, and wetlands are scattered throughout the landscape, supporting diverse fish and wildlife populations including deer, black bear, moose, and an array of waterfowl. Established in 1931, the forest is managed to provide recreational opportunities balanced with sustainable timber production and habitat conservation. Visitors can explore more than 90 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, as well as extensive cross-country skiing and snowmobiling routes in the winter. Popular waterways such as the Prairie River and Woman Lake offer fishing and paddling options. Several campgrounds and remote backcountry sites allow visitors to experience quiet natural settings. Laurentian is also noted for its birdwatching potential, especially during migratory seasons. Its proximity to towns like Grand Rapids and Deer River makes it accessible while preserving a remote wilderness feel, attracting outdoor enthusiasts seeking varied experiences including hiking, biking, fishing, and snow sports.
